Common foot problems include:

Warts are one of several soft tissue conditions of the foot that can be quite painful. They are caused by a virus, which generally invades the skin through small or invisible cuts and abrasions. They can appear anywhere on the skin, but technically only those on the sole are properly called plantar warts.

A bunion is an enlargement of the joint at the base of the big toethe metatarsophalangeal (MTP) jointthat forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place. This forces the toe to bend toward the others, causing an often painful lump of bone on the foot. Since this joint carries a lot of the body's weight while walking, bunions can cause extreme pain if left untreated.

Bunions can occur for a number of reasons, but a common cause is wearing shoes that fit too tightly. Bunions can also develop as a result of an inherited structural defect, stress on your foot or a medical condition, such as arthritis.

An ingrown toenail is a common condition in which the corner or side of one of your toenails grows into the soft flesh of that toe. The result is pain, redness, swelling and, sometimes, an infection. It is readily treated by your foot doctor.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It involves pain and inflammation of a thick band of tissue, called the plantar fascia, which runs across the bottom of your foot. Other problems may cause heel pain and an examination must be done to determine the cause of your heel pain.

A hammertoe is a contractureor bendingof the toe at the first joint of the digit, called the proximal interphalangeal joint. This bending causes the toe to appear like an upside-down V when looked at from the side. Any toe can be involved, but the condition usually affects the second through fifth toes, known as the lesser digits. Hammertoes are more common to females than males.

Painful flatfoot and fallen arches conditions are estimated to affect 5% of US adults, and may limit their desire to exercise. Adult flatfoot often is a complex disorder with a variety of symptoms and varying degrees of deformity and debilitation. Treatment is often simple but may vary depending on severity and other factors.

Ankle sprains are a common injury after a fall or twist. Many people continue to experience chronic pain even after being treated for their initial injury. There are a multitude of issue that may cause the chronic ankle pain. A thorough examination is required to diagnose the cause.
