For the last few years, Nativity has asked the question, “How can we help feed people in Central Oregon?” This inquiry has led us to expand our weekly food pantry distribution, create a community garden, and develop a “food forest” orchard at the church. We are excited that this same question has led to the opening of Common Table in downtown Bend!
When you eat, so will others…
We hope to serve everyone… regardless of whether or not they gave the ability to pay. This mostly locally sourced cafe will feature a farm to table menu served by a large volunteer staff. Under the management of professional chefs and cooks, the menu will be healthy, fresh, and have a decidedly Northwest flavor. Tokens will be available for purchase to be given away to people who are in need of a meal. Tokens will also be given away by local nonprofit partners like NeighborImpact, Family Access Network, and the Latino Community Association. Any and all revenues will go to local feeding programs.
A more sustainable model
This innovative model of feeding people is a joint effort between Nativity Lutheran and our friends at Bend First Prebyterian and Trinity Episcopal. The plan is to be totally self-sustaining within 18 months of opening so that annual major fundraising will not be necessary for operating costs. Common Table is its own 501c3 separate from any of the congregations involved but supported and governed by members from each.
A common space
In the evening, the space will be used to host events, discussions, music, story-telling, and many other opportunities to bring people of varying backgrounds together. The idea is to create a space for community, fun, reconciliation, and service. We hope you will give the cafe a chance and think about how such an endeavor models the Kingdom of God.
