Mitchell Powell Furnishings (MPF) specializes in the restoration, reparation and creation of upholstered furnishings, case goods, wooden objects, and traditional finishes We categorize our reparation practices in the following areas:
MPF has a sister company to MPF Conservation, or MPFC, a separate business that specializes in conservation projects for both private collectors and institutions. Visit the Conservation site at www.mpfconservation.com
Our clients include the State of California, the National Park Service, and Hearst Castle. We also have had articles written on us in magazines such as Renovation Style Magazine.
We also represent an artist who makes one of a kind custom blankets and now, scarves.
The difference between restoration, conservation, and preservation, is that restoration is primarily concerned with the appearance and function of a piece; while conservation and preservation are concerned with preserving the object's structure, with countering physical deterioration, and with preserving the objects history and value to the greatest extent possible.
We have in-house furniture upholsterers, wood workers, and specialty finishers, and also work with independent specialty artists and workers, such as tapestry, blacksmithing, and gilding specialists. All work together on projects under our guidance in order to offer the best expertise possible for our clients.
Mitchell began as an upholstery apprentice 35 years ago, and began his business in Oregon 30 years ago. His interest in history and fine art led him to develop his business as a furniture conservator, specializing in older European and early American techniques. He is a Professional Associate in the AIC.
His wife and partner, Katie, brings design, graphics, photography, documentation and various other fine art skills to the business. She had a previous life as a corporate architectural designer and design instructor at UCLA in Southern California.
