Salem Radiology Consultants is solely owned by a group of radiologist physicians who operate an outpatient imaging facility in Salem, Oregon as well as contract with other organizations to provide radiology professional and management services. Mammography Significantly Lowers Death Rate in Women 40-49
Reston, Va. — Sept. 29, 2010 — The landmark breast cancer screening study of women 40-49, published online in Cancer, has proven that annual mammography screening of women in their 40s reduces the breast cancer death rate in these women by nearly 30 percent. The results of this largest study ever conducted on women in this age group confirm that the use of the age of 50 as a threshold for breast cancer screening is scientifically unfounded. Women should begin getting annual mammograms at age 40.
“This study, which looked at the performance of screening mammography as it is actually used, rather than relying on mathematical modeling, shows without a doubt that mammography decreases deaths from breast cancer in women aged 40–49 by nearly one third. There is no excuse not to recommend that average risk women begin annual screening mammography at age 40,” said Carol H. Lee, MD, Chair of the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Commission.
In Nov. of 2009, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) ignored published data showing a similar death rate reduction to this landmark trial, and withdrew support for screening women 40–­49. This real world study is far more robust, based on real world numbers, and proves that the benefit is nearly twice that of the USPSTF estimate of 15 percent.
“This study shows that annual mammograms for women 40 and over result in a tremendously significant reduction in the breast cancer death rate for women 40­–49. The age of 50 is an artificial threshold that has no basis in scientific fact. The debate is now over. Women should no longer be confused about the importance of annual breast cancer screening. Mammography saves lives. If you are a woman age 40 or over, one of them could be yours,” said Phil Evans, MD, President of the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI).
The Swedish trial followed more than 600,000 women for 16 years. The number of breast cancer deaths among the women in the study who did not receive mammograms was twice as high as those who underwent screening. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. It kills around 465,000 people globally each year. Mammography can catch cancer early, when it is most treatable. While not a perfect test, at present, there is no other screening tool to replace it.
“It is now time to stop confusing women with conflicting information. Mammography is a lifesaver for women in their 40s. What providers need to do now is uniformly confirm for women that they need to start getting annual mammograms beginning at age 40 and work to build on the ability of mammography to detect cancer early, when it is most treatable. Mammography saves a significant number of lives in all women 40 and over. Let’s all move forward from there,” said Gail Lebovic, MD, breast surgeon and President of the American Society of Breast Disease (ASBD).

Salem Radiology Consultants (SRC) has recently expanded its services to include an outpatient Interventional & Vascular Center offering full service consultation and treatment for conditions involving venous insufficiency. The first step toward relief of leg pain and varicose veins is a consultation with Dr. Ken Hirasaki or Dr. Michael Pass. New Bone Density System

On Wednesday August 13th SRC received their new Dexa machine. This new machine has a couple of new advantages that were not available on the older machine. The new machine increases the weight limit of the table from 280 pounds to 350 pounds. In addition, it also has the ability to scan forearms on patients larger than 350 pounds.

Salem Radiology Receives ACR Accreditation for CT, MRI and Mammography

Salem Radiology Consultants has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in CT, MRI and mammography as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, VA, awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR's Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.
ACR Accreditation is important for the following reasons:

ACR accreditation demonstrates commitment to quality patient care
Many prominent health insurers recognize the value of accreditation and require accreditation for paying claims related to diagnostic radiology services.
ACR accreditation programs provide a high level of confidence for patients, referring physicians, and managed care organizations that only the highest quality of care is being provided by accredited facilities.
The ACR certificates of accreditation give assurance that staff and equipment have passed the ACR's rigorous evaluation.

As an increasing number of provider practices make the transition to electronic medical record (EMR) systems, Salem Radiology Consultants understands that paper reports may no longer be your preferred method of receiving information on your patients. SRC has installed the technology to securely transfer patient reports to your EMR system within seconds of being finalized by the radiologist. The process of transmitting electronic reports involves a series of meetings between your practice, SRC and your EMR vendor integration specialist in order to establish how the two systems will talk to each other and how to enable a secure network connection between facilities. Your EMR vendor may also charge you a fee for adding the software module that allows you to interface with outside laboratory and radiology facilities. "American Cancer Society Recommends Breast MRI"

The American Cancer Society has updated its guidelines for breast cancer screening and is now recommending that for women who are at an extraordinarily high risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime, that in addition to annual mammography, they also have an annual MRI performed of both breasts. Women considered to be at extraordinarily high risk would be women who are known carriers of the two breast cancer mutations that are easily testable, which are the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. And women who are first-degree relatives of someone with one of those gene abnormalities, but have not yet been tested. Or a woman with a significant family history, who by a breast-cancer risk model, would have a lifetime risk of somewhere between 20 and 25 percent. The American Cancer Society recommends that women in these groups still receive a mammogram because the complement of the mammogram and a breast MRI actually provides the highest pickup rate of early breast cancers. Consistent with the American Cancer Society guidelines, the radiologists at Salem Radiology perform MRI guided biopsy procedures.
