Ron Thurheimer of Woodland, Washington caught this huge 92-pound Halibut fishing off the northern coast of Oregon with Charlton Charters during the 2004 halibut season opener on May 1st. [ larger view ] Numerous 60 to 70 pound pacific halibut are often caught during the halibut fishing season.
For the past five years halibut fishing off the north Oregon coast has been fantastic, rivaling that of Alaska. Many are unaware that huge halibut weighing upwards 60 to 80 pounds each are available in the waters just off the Oregon coast. Our Oregon halibut fishing trips are day trips averaging 8 to 10 hours. Oregon Chinook Salmon
Of the five species of Pacific salmon, the Chinook and Coho are the most important to anglers. The two are often found in the same waters and pursued in much the same way, but the Chinook is the larger of the two and highly prized among anglers. The Columbia River is a prime area to target Chinook salmon. When hooked, Chinook like to slug it out, while Coho's are acrobatic and quick.
Chinook are also known as the king salmon or spring salmon. Chinook salmon are powerful swimmers that migrate hundreds of miles up Oregon rivers to their spawning grounds, and they can grow huge. The rod-and-reel world record was taken in Alaska's Kenai River in 1985 and weighed 97 pounds, 4 ounces. Most fish caught by northwest anglers, however, range from 15 to 40 pounds. At the end of a fishing line, Chinooks are absolute brutes - hard-running, stubborn fighters that will give you all the challenge you can handle, and sometimes more. Ocean trips prices

Sturgeon are always on tap for Catch & Release on the Lower Columbia River. But Oregon sets seasons for retention of these special prehistoric game fish. Common Names: Pacific sturgeon, Oregon sturgeon, Columbia sturgeon, and Sacramento sturgeon. Sometimes misspelled as sturgon. White sturgeon are the largest freshwater fish in North America and can weigh over 1,500 pounds, be 20 feet in length, and live for over 100 years. Anadromous white sturgeon most commonly move into large rivers in early spring, and spawn May through June.
White sturgeon are tough fighters -- so make sure you are ready to do battle. Many days a charter boat will catch and release over 50 fish. If your lucky enough to be here on a retention date you will quickly become a coinsure of the best eating fish there is. If you like Halibut its a sure thing you'll love Sturgeon.
A significant economic and cultural resource along the Oregon coast and throughout the Columbia River. The Columbia River near Astoria is the site of an intense sport fishery, as is the San Joaquin Delta in California and the Willapa Bay in Washington where guided and charter fishing trips are popular. The white sturgeon is also an important fish for Oregon coast charter operators in Astoria, Warrenton and Hammond Oregon. Ocean trips prices

Thia S. O. B. seems to delight in charging in full throttle close to shore along the "Social Security Beach" on the Columbia River where dozens of sport fishermen who didn't pay him his exorbitant rates and just want a relaxing day's fishing sitting on the beach bait or spinner fishing for salmon, have to then endure the major wakes from his boat rip and tear gear along the beach, or practically knock hip-deep fishermen over in the water. I have watched him on a daily basis actually turn IN towards the beach as he returns from the ocean and hit full throttle no more than a few dozen yards offshore, then have to turn BACK OUT towards the main channel to get around the point eastward of the beach after he's passed all the fishermen. He comes in close enough to lob a hand grenade onto his deck. I only wish I had one. What, you think tormenting those who don't wish to buy your services makes you somehow a stud?
