Sunday, November 28, 11:00am
Rev. Heather Starr: “When Our Heart Is In A Holy Place”:
What actually happens to us, physically and emotionally, when we pause for a moment to be grateful? What does appreciation and thankfulness do for our bodies, our relationships, and our spirits? Is gratitude an essential component of religious faith? Bring a harvest item—a potato, onion, squash, or apple—to place on the altar before the service.
The recipient of this month’s Greater Community Collection is the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee’s "Guest At Your Table" program—remember to bring your boxes to the November 28 Sunday service!
Rev. Heather Starr: “Light One Candle”
In the midst of these days and nights of Hanukkah, we will share in songs and stories from the Jewish tradition as we also ponder the value, for all of us, of intentionally slowing down in one another’s company to savor the blessings of our lives.
Sunday, December 12, 11:00am
"Celebrating Darkness: How Do We Find Comfort and Joy When Light is Lessened?"
This service will be filled with music, poetry and readings that contemplate the many aspects of dealing with the dark as represented by shorter daylight hours and darkness of the spirit.
Sunday, December 19, 11:00am
Rev. Heather Starr: “Savoring the Solstice”
It is quite possible that it is this quiet, almost imperceptible event—the longest night, the shifting once again of the seasons—on which all our other holidays and traditions at this time of year are based. Let us take note of this moment, this transition, as we gather in worship together.
Discussion, 1:00-2:00pm
Tom Wykes: “Stoicism As a 21st Century Philosophy of Life”
What Stoics seek “is how the mind may always pursue a steady and favorable course, may be well-disposed towards itself, and may view its conditions with joy.”—Seneca
Stoicism was founded by Zeno around 300 BC and was influential throughout the Greco- Roman world until at least 200 AD. We will be exploring Stoicism’s relevance as a 21st century philosophy of life through the writings of William B. Irvine. NOTE: This discussion will start at 1 pm.
Friday, December 24, 5:30pm
